Making improvements to a local country park:
Firstly: think about who uses the service or might have any contact with it:
You would probably need to engage with:
- a wide variety of park users
- people who live nearby or within a certain distance
- the rangers
- local agencies
- community groups such as green activists and young people
- businesses
Secondly: make sure to engage with a wide variety of people
According to:
- age
- gender
- disability
- ethnicity
- economic status
- different days and times they might use the park
Address the barriers that some people and groups have to involvement. Design the public engagement activity so that people have the opportunity to say everything they want to and so that decision-makers can consider all aspects, e.g. disabled people might require more accessible paths, or signs in Braille. Women might require more rangers around early mornings or evenings.
Thirdly: engage with
- lapsed users
- local non-users
to find out why they don’t use the park.
